Even in the over-arching idea of Katniss as the hero who must finish the journey alone, Finnick didn't have to be sacrificed to satisfy the plot. I really hated Prim's death, too, but as was pointed out, Prim's death was the final straw that led Katniss to kill Coin. WebPrim's death shows how people can loose everything they're fighting for in battle, but that doesn't mean it's over. It shows how war will steal innocence without any regards and this kept the book realistic. TL/DR- Finnick's death was abrupt, pointless and badly written. Prim's death was depressing, but well done and significant to the story.
